Stereo: www.youtube.com Waylon Jennings – Amanda (1979) “Amanda” was originally written by Bob McDill and was first recorded by Don Williams in 1973. After finishing what he called “an apology to my wife,” McDill sent the demo tape to Waylon’s office, where it apparently was lost. Waylon first heard the song when Williams’ version was released, and he even called McDill to tell him that the song was right up his alley, and wished that McDill had given him the first chance to record the song. McDill then explained to Waylon that he had given him dibs to the song, and Jennings responded by recording the song for his 1974 “I’m a Ramblin’ Man” album. Jennings didn’t intend for the song to be released as a single, because he assumed that it had run its course on the country charts. Five years later, in 1979, Jennings released his first “Greatest Hits” album, and “Amanda” was included. RCA Records, whom Jennings was recording for at the time, released Jennings’ version of the song as a single, and it went straight to #1.
